What is Sauna Fest
Sauna Fest North Island is where The Sauna Project's nationwide community of wood-fired mobile saunas comes together for one unforgettable weekend. Over 20 unique themed saunas scattered around the festival grounds, beside the lake and through the park.
Sauna Fest exists to serve genuine wellness, creating a weekend where you can slow down, be completely yourself, and connect with like-minded people.
What to expect
Wood-fired mobile saunas from across Aotearoa. Silent, women's only, family, free-flowing. Each one unique.
NZ's inaugural Aufguss Championship. Experience or compete in our competition. This is where we define NZ's take on sauna culture.
Moon, Star, Sun and Earth zones filled with workshops, yoga, dance, talks and meditation all weekend.
Live music throughout the festival. Atmospheric, not aggressive. Music wraps at 1am so you can rest and go again.
A cosy indoor space for receiving healing and nourishment. Practitioners offer a variety of healing practices, including massage.
Morning 5km lake loop run, sauna and cold plunge, both Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Food trucks, market stalls and local makers. Diverse, delicious and catered for all food preferences.
Playgrounds, pump track, bouncy pillow and a kids zone staffed by experienced kindergarten teachers.
"I left Sauna Fest with a feeling of elation that I had never experienced before. I think the saunas bring people together, break down barriers, and allow you to truly connect with others. At no point did I feel like I was having a solo experience. It was one of the most connected I've ever felt in a large group of people."— Jayde McLean, Festival Attendee
Founded in 2023, Sauna Fest has grown from a humble backyard project into the annual gathering you see today at Blue Lake Holiday Park—proving just how naturally sauna culture fits into New Zealand.
Each year, over one thousand people attend Sauna Fest, and we intend to keep the experience intentionally intimate. By choosing not to expand our numbers, we can focus all our energy on what truly matters—elevating the quality, depth, and imagination of the festival year after year.
The feeling of being at Sauna Fest is something that simply has to be experienced. It's a warm, slow-unfolding energy over the course of the weekend that leaves you with a genuine sense of connection to those around you—a space where friends and family gather for a cherished annual tradition, leaving deeply nourished, inspired, and enriched. We have the saunas to thank for that.
We'd love to welcome you to the shores of Lake Tikitapu for a weekend that's as unique as it sounds.

We carefully curate our schedule to focus exclusively on grounded, practical education, somatic movement, and skill-sharing. While meaningful and enriching experiences are warmly welcomed, a festival environment is dynamic and social rather than a clinical container. For this reason, we intentionally steer clear of high-intensity modalities — such as breathwork, ritual or shamanic practices, and deep emotional, somatic, or energetic processing work — ensuring our spaces remain accessible, safe, and supportive.
With a high volume of applications and limited spots, we cannot accept everyone. Curation is driven entirely by the authentic energy and quality of a facilitator's craft — not online metrics — and some proposals simply may not align with our vision. Furthermore, past facilitation does not guarantee a return, as we are dedicated to bringing fresh voices and diversity each year. We appreciate your patience during review and ask that you approach the outcome with humility — if the answer is no, please accept it with grace.
Do you have a different idea that you believe would be a perfect fit? We welcome all proposals that align with a grounded, practical, and educational approach and look forward to hearing from you.
Please read our Ethical Compass before applying — all facilitators and practitioners are required to agree to these guidelines.

Facilitator & Practitioner Guidelines
As a facilitator or practitioner at Sauna Fest, you hold a vital role in nurturing the culture, safety, and container of our community. We ask all contributors to align with the following core principles:
Ensure all information, techniques, and practices are well-founded, culturally grounded, and delivered with deep respect. Be entirely transparent about your qualifications and the origins of your work, whether it is informative, experiential, or somatic.
Maintain the highest professional standards, treating every attendee with unconditional respect, dignity, and inclusivity.
Recognize and actively navigate potential power imbalances, always maintaining clear, conscious, and supportive professional boundaries.
Honor participant boundaries and personal autonomy at all times in workshop settings, empowering attendees to choose their level of participation without pressure.
Communicate with clarity, respect, and compassion. Obtain explicit, clear consent before initiating any physical touch, bodywork, or direct energetic intervention.
Respect participant privacy in group workshop settings by maintaining strict confidentiality of all shares, while facilitating grounded, regulated experiences that steer clear of heavy emotional releases.
Remain fully present, grounded, and entirely substance-free while holding space or offering your modality during the festival.
Work strictly within your expertise. Avoid deep trauma processing on-site; instead, offer grounding care and arrange follow-up sessions post-festival.
